The five primary sellers of video equipment in the United States are themselves manufacturers.
Video is one of the most common household items used in many applications in our lives today. It simply refers to a moving image watched on a screen. Technically, video is the process of electronically capturing, recording, processing, storing, transmitting, and reconstructing these images.
The United States provides some of the biggest markets for consumer and professional video equipment. Most of the video equipment are manufactured, sold, and used in combination with necessary audio component. The audio and video equipment manufacturing and selling is a multi-billion dollar industry.
Consumer electronic products are developed and manufactured to provide equipment to be used for the different stages in capturing, recording, and reviewing images as video.
The leading manufacturers of these video equipments, in most cases, themselves sell their products or appoint dealers and distributors in strategic locations all over the United States. Many other independent business enterprises are engaged in the marketing and sales of these video equipments and accessories, carrying different brand names.
Manufacture and sale of audio and video equipment are included in one single industry category. Audio cannot be separated from video, since audio is a necessity in video recording and playback.
The audio and video equipment industry was on the decline when the new millennium came in. From a total shipment value of $8.2 billion in 1999, it declined to $7.7 billion for the calendar year 2000. The household audio and video equipment industry was worth in 2000 only $7.2 billion.
The market for the sale of video equipment has a 95 percent penetration in United States households. Aside from a slower rate of obsolescence compared to the other electronic equipment, another reason for a wide patronage of video equipment products is the love of Americans for digital products like DVD players and digital television.
Zenith Electronic Corporation is now a subsidiary of the South Korean business giant LG Electronics. Until 1999, Zenith was a manufacturer of consumer electronic products such as TVs, DVD players, VCRs, home audio systems, home theater systems, and set-top boxes. Zenith had total sales as of December 2007 of about $109.4 million.
The MEI, an abbreviation for the Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. is a manufacturer and marketer of home audio and video equipment products. Panasonic, Quasar, Technics, and JVC are among the most famous brands of the corporation. Among the audio and video equipment made and sold by the MEI are TVs, VCRs, CD, and DVD players, PCs, cellular phones, and fax machines.
The business enterprise also sells components, devices, and accessories such as batteries, electric motors, displays, and semiconductors; home appliances like washing machines and vacuum cleaners; and factory automation equipment including industrial robots and welding equipment. Matsushita’s sales as of March 2007 are $77,419.4 million with an estimated net income of $1,846.1 million.
Philips Electronics North America is one of the largest producer and seller of video equipment in the United States. It is a subsidiary of the Dutch Royal Philips Electronics. Included in the company’s products among a wide array of consumer electronics are televisions, CD and DVD players, and PC peripherals.
Sony Corporation of America is subsidiary of Sony Corporation of Japan. Its line of products includes almost all kinds of consumer electronics devices and equipment. It also sells its own products through a nationwide set-up of dealers and distributors. The video equipment products of Sony include TVs, PDAs, DVD and MP3 players, digital cameras, camcorders, computers, CD players and car audio products.
Sanyo North America Corporation is one of the largest manufacturing and selling enterprise of video equipment in the United States. It is a subsidiary of the giant electronics-producing conglomerate Sanyo Electric. The consumer electronics video products include TVs, VCRs, DVD players; and audio systems, MP3 players, wireless phones, and digital cameras too. The March 2007 sales level of the Sanyo stood at $25.2 million.
The video equipment consumer products of these manufacturers and at the same time sellers are available in different shops throughout the entire United States. The worldwide web is also a venue to select and purchase a video equipment consumer product, the easier way.

For those of us who have lost precious home movies on removable media that becomes damaged or inoperable, who have misplaced those same disks or flash media never to be found again, or who have missed capturing an important moment because we forgot to bring additional storage media, it is time to rejoice.

The age of the hard disk drive camcorder has dawned. Finally.

The first offerings were introduced nearly a year and a half ago. JVC and Sony have led the way with camcorder models which offer 30GB hard drives. Although even greater feats are surely in the future for the newest members of the camcorder family, these forerunners certainly offer some impressive advantages for home movie makers.

• Large storage capacity.

Depending upon the recording mode, a 30 GB HDD camcorder can capture and store up to 7-21 hours of film without stopping to insert alternate media or to download to computer.

• Cost efficient.

Current HDD camcorder models start around $500 and therefore, are at the mid to high end of the market. However, savings are to be had as the purchase of mini DV tapes, media cards, compact flash, and the like are no longer necessary.

• A fix for the forgetful.

For those who forget to tote along separate storage media an HDD camcorder can be a life saver. In addition, for those who have inadvertently filmed over existing movies, the HDD camcorder will eliminate these heartbreaking moments as they automatically begin recording where the film left off.

• Functions that make working with movies easier.

Current HDD camcorder models have received acclaim for allowing users to easily sort through footage without the need to rewind or fast forward. Images appear on a thumbnail grid and can be sorted, deleted, rearranged, and dubbed directly on the camcorder.

Obviously, even a great hard drive does not have infinite storage and certainly damage to it can occur, so back up will continue to be necessary. Current JVC models tout a shock absorbing suspension system to protect the hard drive and even a sensor that can shut power off when the camcorder is in the process of being dropped but in the case of prized footage, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Downloading to a PC which allows further editing and storage or burning to DVD is advisable. Hitachi is said to be developing a model that will allow users to burn directly to DVD from the camcorder; no PC required.

It appears that everyone should stay tuned as bigger and better things are surely in store for HDD camcorders. However, for consumers currently shopping for their next device, a hard disk drive model is certainly worthy of consideration today; not only for HDDs future as the leader in the camcorder industry but also for the features they currently possess that make home movie making a joy.

Christine Peppler believes that consumers should not have to possess a technology degree to be able to choose home electronics and entertainment devices. Take advantage of the wealth of simple to understand, useful information and shopping available on her website at http://www.homemedias.info

It can be quite bewildering when choosing a camcorder, especially with so many available in the different formats combined with the array of different model numbers and opinions from different sources. If your prime consideration is to produce short video clips for publishing on your web site then there is no need to go overboard and buy the most expensive model. A lower priced model offering the desirable features mention towards the end of this article will be perfectly adequate.
Here’s a quick overview of each of the main digital camcorder formats that you should consider for producing videos for your website. There are other formats not mentioned here but our advice is to choose from one of the following three formats.
Mini-DV
Launched by Sony in 1995, DV (or Mini-DV) is the most popular consumer digital video format. DV camcorders provide what is arguably the best quality of all of the home video formats, with all models possessing the capability to transfer video signals out to another device (such as a Windows or Apple Mac computer) via FireWire, also known as i.Link. An increasing number of DV camcorders also make it possible to copy edited recordings back to the DV tape in the camcorder using what is known as DV-in. This format offers the most choice and is the standard by which all other formats are judged.
DVD
Hitachi first launched camcorders that record to 8cm DVD disks back in 2001, and several other major manufacturers soon followed suit. DVD camcorders use MPEG-2 compression prior to writing the signals to disk. One of the major problems of DVD camcorders has been the compatibility issue between DVD camcorders and home DVD players, though these are quickly being resolved. If you’re planning to import your DVD footage into a computer for editing, you should note that editing DVD (MPEG2) compressed files is much more difficult than it is when working with a format like DV or Digital-8. Editing applications (as bundled with camcorders) aren’t that good and it is advisable to purchase third party editing suites. However, the format is now very popular, despite the difficulties with editing.
HDD (Hard Disk Drive)
JVC is one company that is forging ahead with its drive to make Hard Disk recording camcorders more popular and push tape and disk based formats aside altogether. The Everio G camcorder range is a good example of camcorders which uses tiny internal hard disk drives very similar to the larger HDs used in all computers. The company’s GZ-MG50 model, just one of many, enables recording of up to 7 hours at best quality. Apple’s iPod MP3 players use very similar technology and provide a similar level of interactivity with the files saved onto them. HDD camcorders save files which can then be deleted, moved and transferred just like those on your computer or iPod. They also much more flexible in your ability to access different clips on the hard drive before editing takes place. All the major manufacturers make models of various specifications to suit every pocket. One major drawback is the fact that once the hard disk is full you need to download to a computer or stop shooting.
Which ever format you choose, and at this site we are using miniDV, bear in mind the following four desirable requirements for producing good quality videos for your website.
Firewire compatible
External microphone jack for connecting an external microphone for enhanced audio quality.
Remote control, essential if shooting a video on your own.
Quality lens.
As the mainstream consumer market favors ease of use, portability, and price, consumer camcorders emphasize these features more than raw technical performance. For example, good low light capabilities require large capturing chips, which affects price and size. Thus, consumer camcorders are often unable to shoot useful footage in dim light. Manual controls need space, either in menus or as buttons and make the use more complicated, which goes against the requirement of ease of use. Consumer units lack many manual settings, often excluding video exposure, gain control, or sound level management. For the beginner, entry level camcorders offer basic recording and playback capability.
For the more advanced user, high end units offer improved optical and video performance through multi-CCD components and name brand optics, manual control of camera exposure, and more, but even consumer camcorders which are sold for $1000 are not well suited for recording in dim light. When dimly lit areas are brightened in camera or in post production, considerable noise distracts the viewer. We recommend setting up a basic home studio with lights to make best use of your camcorders abilities and to produce good quality videos.
Ten years ago, consumer video editing was a difficult task requiring a minimum of two recorders. Now, however, a standard PC of even modest power can perform digital video editing with low cost editing software. Many consumer camcorders bundle a light (feature limited) version of such software, as do some computers, and more advanced software is highly recommended and is widely available at a variety of price points.

A digital camera is a camera that captures images on a light-sensitive sensor. It can record video or still photograph, or both. It has many features that are not available in film cameras such as displaying an image on the screen right after it was taken, the capability to save thousands of pictures, the ability to revise and delete images, and record video with sound. Nowadays, digital cameras are integrated in almost every high-tech gadget like PDA’s, notebooks, mobile phones, and even astronomical equipment.

Nearly every digital camera uses some kind of storage device to store image data. Some of the most common removable storage tools include CompactFlash (CF-I), Memory Stick, Microdrive (CF-II), MicroSD, MiniSD Card, MultiMediaCard (MMC), Secure Digital Card (SD), SmartMedia, USB flash drive, and xD-Picture Card (xD). The general data formats for digital camera images are the Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) and Joint Photography Experts Group (JPEG). Though there are a number of cameras, particularly DSLR cameras, that support a Raw format. A raw image data is an unprocessed set of pixels found from the camera’s sensor. Some manufacturers have their own formats to save raw data. Nikon has NEF type, CR2 or CRW for Canon, and MRW for Minolta. If you are planning to buy a digital camera or already have one, you may want to check the types of digital cameras listed below. The more you know about your gadget, the better you can take advantage of its potentials.

Bridge Also referred to as SLR-like cameras, bridge types are high-end cameras that are sort of the combination of DSLRs and compact cameras thus called “bridge”. Models of bridge cameras currently out in market include the Fujifilm FinePix S100fs, Canon PowerShot S5 IS, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 and Olympus SP-570UZ.

Compact Digital For informal and “snapshot” uses, compact cameras are highly recommended. They are small and very handy but the disadvantage with this type is some functionalities are compromised. Mainly all compact cameras have built-in flash typically of low power, restricted capability for motion picture, and macro capability.

Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) It is a type of digital camera that applies an automatic mirror mechanism that guides light from the lens all the way through the viewfinder eyepiece. One of the reasons why DSLR has so much popularity despite its very high cost is its ability to replace and attach specialized lenses based on one’s photographic requirements.

Digital Rangefinder A camera equipped with a rangefinder is called a rangefinder camera. It uses a focusing mechanism that permits the photographer to gauge the distance of the subject before taking the shots that are in sharp focus. This is in contrast with most digital cameras that have automatic focus. The first ever digital rangefinder camera is the Epson R-D1 which is the result of Epson and Cosina’s partnership.

Video Camera This type are used to record images in motion such as professional video cameras (used in TV and movie production); camcorders (used by beginners and includes a microphone to record sound); and webcams (for people chatting over the internet).

Ten years ago the answer to the question of what are the different types of camcorders would have been Analog. Analog video cameras, which used to record to VHS videotapes, were heavy, large and bulky because they contained an entire video recorder, along with the lens and camera device and had almost no options to choose from.
As with everything else camcorders have come a long way and today with digital technology the answer to the question of what are the different types of camcorders has grown immensely. Today there is digital and digital camcorders that are advanced while being user-friendly, compact and provide a fun, easy and accessible movie making experience for anyone.
The type of a digital camcorder mainly centers around the media it utilizes and specifically around its recording capability and storage device. There are several types of camcorders and choosing the right one for you mostly depends on this feature as it affects both usability and price.
MiniDV Camcorder: The MiniDV type of camcorder is small, sleek and stylish mostly due to the fact that it uses the very small MiniDV cassettes as the storage device. The recorded video is then transfered to PC via the firewire port on the PC and downloaded. Once edited and finished you can burn the completed video onto a DVD. This is a very popular and common type of camcorder. The video and sound quality is very good.
MicroMV Camcorder: The MicroMV also uses tapes but they are are much smaller than MiniDV tapes and the MicroMV uses advanced compression technology. The Micro MV records very high quality video as well as possess the capability of full digital editing. The MicroMV is also very compact, lightweight and ultra small.
DVD Camcorder: With this type of camcorder you can record video directly to a DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD RAM.
DVD-R is a recordable DVD format with a write-once only capability. DVD-RW is a recordable DVD but it allows rewrites and so provides unlimited writing to same disk. DVD-RAM or DVD Random Access Memory is a DVD disc, which can be recorded with information, erased, and recorded again. DVD-RAM is considered a highly reliable format, as the discs have built-in error control and a defect management system. Therefore, DVD-RAM is perceived to be better than the other DVD technologies.
There are two Versions of the DVD Type Digital Camcorders: One works with rewritable DVD-RAM discs requiring a DVD player with RAM playback or a PC with a DVD-RAM drive. The other works by using the more popular DVD-RW and DVD-R (DVD-rewritable) discs that work with most ordinary DVD players and allow for actual recording of images to the DVD disk. A great feature of this recording format is the ability to edit in-camera and with repeated playbacks the disk does not degrade.
HDD Digital Camcorders: Hard Disk Drive camcorders are types that are compact and record in MPEG-2 video that are saved to an internal hard disk drive within the camcorder. The upside of this type of camcorder is the ability of storing huge amounts of video data by using compression. The video is saved to the internal hard disc within the camcorder and then downloaded to a computer and burnt onto to a DVD. The HDD camcorder has no moving parts and so there is less chance of mechanical breakdown.
Flash Media Camcorders: This formats records images to an internal Flash drive and Flash Memory cards. Flash Memory cards include, SD, Compact Flash, Memory Stick and Memory Stick Duo.
Digital 8 Camcorders: This format records digital video to Hi-8 videotapes. Digital 8 is a consumer digital videotape format developed by Sony, and introduced in 1999. Digital 8 camcorder uses the same videocassettes as analog Hi8 equipment, but differs in that the audio/video signal is encoded digitally. Picture quality is fairly good and this format allows playback of analog videotapes recorded on Hi-8 camcorders.
VHS Camcorders: These types of camcorders still records to VHS tapes but the data is recorded digitally. Picture quality is fairly good and this format allows playback of analog videotapes.
The Wonderful World of High-Def: High definition is a beautiful thing and HDV Digital Camcorders record and save data in full 1920×1080 resolution. The most expensive of the bunch, High Definition Video camcorders usually utilize MiniDV tapes or Hard Disk Drive that capture and record video. The high resolution recording provides the highest quality and clarity which provides the most magnificent video picture of any camcorder on the market today and it looks great on high definition television.
The key to choosing the right type of camcorder for you is to determine your personal use and to find a happy medium between usability and price. While price differs among the many types of camcorders one thing is true about all camcorders they are an expensive investment. An important fact to consider is that the Internet has provided a forum where millions of sellers and merchants compete for your business, and that competition provides many money saving opportunities, retail is no longer the only option and lots of money can be saved by purchasing a discount digital camcorder rather than paying retail.

Finding the right video camera requires a few simple steps. Start by researching the various products available in the marketplace.

If you’re unfamiliar with video cameras, doing your homework now can better ensure you’ll be satisfied with your final purchase. Many consumers are use to particular brand names, and the quality and features associated with each. If this is your first video camera, you may want to take the plunge and purchase a truly top-of-the-line model, or just get your big toe wet with a less expensive unit. The challenge is in selling yourself that the extra cost, whatever it may be, will be able to generate the results you need to make it all worthwhile.

This research process can be used when making any type of photo purchase. First set the price range. How much are you willing to spend? Determine if you’re looking for an amateur or a professional grade camera. Even if you’re an amateur, sometimes the pro shops can offer some surprisingly accessible products. Regardless, it’s helpful to go to a major photo and video supplier’s Web site to check out what’s available.

There’s one more step to be taken. Locate other folks who had already made purchases and shared their thoughts. User expectation is a big factor in a consumer’s experience. For instance, one person may make a negative comment about a feature. However, that feature is irrelevant to your need for that product. Read the good comments and the bad. Then shift through the details for what really matters to you.

Camcorders on Magnik.com offers a wide range of professional brand names and large selection. Additionally, it features feedback from users.

With the products, prices and amateur reviews in hand, take a look at professional reviews – the folks who earn a living as a photographers. The Web site www.camcorderinfo.com is a good resource.

Before, after or as you read consumer reviews, make a list of all the realistic scenarios as to how you plan to use the video camera. Will you use it in low light conditions? Do you care about audio? Does it need to be compact and portable? Will you need to carry it a distance? Will you be able to react to impromptu situations? Does it have a million accessories and how much do they cost? How long does the battery last? Is it complicated to download the contents? How much data can be held on the storage device? Will you need a tripod?

The next thing, to ask yourself is “What are you willing to sacrifice to get the majority of what you want in the price range you desire?” There is no single perfect camera (in an affordable price range of most consumers). Remember that old expression, “you can’t be all things to all people.” It’s called an average camera.

There’s a professional photographer who wanted to move into video. His choice for this first-time buy was a JVC video camera. It’s a lower end price range professional video camera ($2,000-ish). JVC has a reputation for making some great DVD/CD and stereo equipment leading one to believe that all their products should offer similar performance. The runner up was a highly rated, semi-amateur/professional Sony camera in a mid-range price ($1,200-$1,300). Then there was the highly-rated Panasonic for $900. It was reported that the results for this camera in low light conditions were poor and grainy. All things considered it was still a good camera. Like all video cameras, the built-in audio is considered sub-par. If you plan to digitally add sound that should not be an issue.

So ultimately what was the professional photographer’s choice? The photographer opted for the Sony.

Buying cheaper is not always the best option. Being happy with the equipment and using it rather than having it sit in the box makes all the difference.

I. JVC camcorder, Canon FS100 camera and other similar cameras record their movies as .MOD files. A question thus arises, what’s MOD format, how to play MOD files on Computer?*.MOD files are actually MPEG-2 files with AC3 audio, similar to a VOB file on a DVD or the M2T files used on Sony hard drive camcorders, this video file format is used on many digital camcorders, such as the JVC Everio, the Canon FS100 and the Panasonic D-Snap SD-card camcorders. For playback, I liked the VLC player the best. An alternative player is MPlayer (but it played my movies rather slow).Since MOD Video files are not supported by windows media player, windows movie maker and iPod, iPhone, PSP, Zune, Creative Zen, Blackberry, etc portable MP3 MP4 Players, Cell Phone, if you want to import MOD files from your camcorders to edit on windows movie maker, You may need to convert MOD to WMV video files first, here is a tutorial that will outline one method of convert the Canon, Panasonic, JVC, Everio camcorder supported video files, such as convert MOD to AVI, or convert MOD to MPEG , MP4 FLV VOB MOV MKV MP3, etc common video formats which are compatiable with WMP and other portable multimedia players.II. How to Convert MOD Video files to AVI WMV MPEG MP4 FLV VOB MOV MKV MP3To begin with, free download Daniusoft MOD Converter which can convert MOD to common video formats compatiable with WMP, install and run with the overall interface like this..Step 1. Copy the .MOD file from your video camera to your hard drive. Click the “Add Files” button to browse your computer hard disc and load the MOD/TOD video files you want to convert to the MOD Converter.Step 2. Select Output SettingsYou can select output format from the categorized output formats list in “Convert to” drop-down list and specify the output directory to save your converted files in “Target Path” drop-down list. If you want to convert mod/TOD video for portable device and don’t know which formats your device supports, you can just select the format according to the device name.Tips:In the output settings area you can click “Settings” button to customize the output parameters like video resolution, frame rate, bit rate, encoder, etc, if you want to make things simple, the default setting also works well.Step 3: The last step will be conversion. Click “Start” button on the MOD Converter, and all the tasks will be done. During the whole conversion, you can have a clear idea of the conversion process such as converted length and time in the “Converting” window popped up.Tips: If you want to customize the video, this MOD Converter offers a powerful video editing function, including cropping video, setting the video effects, clipping to choose the length of the movie, even customizing personal watermark to meet your personalized needs. After you convert MOD/TOD Video files with Daniusoft MOD Converter, you can import MOD Movie from your camcorders to Windows Movie Maker, iPod, Zune, etc without problem:)Useful Tags:MOD to AVI, MOD to WMV, MOD to MPEG .
